| The three black oval structures are carapaces from an extinct bivalved Phyllocarid crustacean called Caryocaris, collected from the Lower Ordovician Palmetto Formation, Esmeralda County, Nevada. Caryocaris attained a sporadic worldwide distribution, although it is often found only in close association with graptolitic shale facies of the early Ordovician Period. |
