Caryocaris Crustaceans

Lower Ordovician Palmetto Formation

Esmeralda County, Nevada

The three black oval structures are carapaces from an extinct bivalved Phyllocarid crustacean called Caryocaris, collected from the Lower Ordovician Palmetto Formation, Esmeralda County, Nevada. Caryocaris attained a sporadic worldwide distribution, although it is often found only in close association with graptolitic shale facies of the early Ordovician Period.
