Here are several stipes from a Tetragraptus sp. graptolite, collected from the Al Rose Formation, Inyo County, California. Note the sawtooth-like structures on the graptolite rhabdosome at left; each of those sawtooth compartments is called a theca, inside of which the colonial graptolite animal lived.
