Here in Echo Canyon is one of the most accessible exposures in all of Death Valley National Park of the Lower Cambrian Wood Canyon Formation (roughly 535 to 530 million years old). The Wood Canyon yields the oldest trilobites in all the Death Valley district. It also produces sensational trace fossils--worm and trilobite trails that criss-cross quartzite bedding planes. The dark gray exposures along the skyline belong to the Middle to Late Canbrian Bonanza King Formation. |
