Johnson Canyon

Here is a terrific geologic contact in Johnson Canyon between two very famous Precambrian sedimentary rock formation in the Death Valley district. At the base of the mountain, bordering the dry wash, are blocky reddish brown to whitish quartzites of the Sterling Quartzite; the smoother slopes above the blocky quartzite are quartzites and quartzitic siltstones of the Johnnie Formation.
